The Financial Empowerment Academy – Hosted by The Well
This free event is hosted by the Financial Empowerment Academy at The Well Community for Women on February 1st, from 10:00 AM to 12:00PM. This program for survivors of human trafficking and domestic violence is a first of its kind; it aims to give participants the skills, tools and support to become financially empowered and independent. Rather than sitting through a lecture on how to create and live through a budget, participants will use the Bite of Reality phone App that can be easily downloaded to smart phones or tablets.
All participants are assigned an identity; financial occupation, salary, spouse and family, student loan debt, credit card debt, and medical insurance payments. Then the participants will walk around to various table-top stations where they will need to make decisions on what type of housing, transportation, food, clothing, household necessities, day care, fun stuff and other needs. Fortunately, the game also includes a “credit Union” table-top station to help with their financial needs. There’s even a “Fickle Finger of Fate” that will give participants unexpected “expenses” or “windfalls” – just like in real life. It’s Fun, Safe and Interactive!
Space is limited but we need your help to spread the word. This is open to all survivors and if you are a service provider you are also welcome to attend to learn more about the program. Please feel free to share the invite with others you think might be interested. The Well Community for Women will also be providing FREE childcare. We look forward to seeing you there!
